Architecture of Faculty of Architecture won prize Prosteel 2012 Steel Structure Design Student Competition
Prosteel 2012 Steel Structure Design Student Competition which is annually organized by Borusan Mannesmann Industry and Trade Inc. with the aim of developing creative structural solutions by emphasizing the unique features of steel and of providing experience to students in design and application of steel is concluded. A Group from our students from the Department of Architecture of Faculty of Architecture and Design Enes Abdullah BOZKURT, Burak TAŞKÖPRÜ, Aslıhan ÜTE, student from Department of Architecture of İTÜ Faculty of Architecture Esma BOZKURT and student from Department of Civil Engineering of İstanbul University Çağrı UYSAL with nickname of 03745 won the prize of 1st Honorable Mention.

Print Techniques on The Ceramic Surfaces” seminar and workshop were occured at the Degirmendere Ali Ozbay Vocational School, ceramic studio of Ceramic, glass and tile programme on 5th April 2012 by Leman KALAY who is a lecturer at the Ordu University, Faculty of Fine Arts Ceramic department. People and students concerned with workshop which included photocopy print, monoprint, laser print and screen printing techniques.

Erdal ARLI has joined was signed in Varna. Prof. Dr. Boyan MEDNIKAROV rector and Dr. Nikolai VELIKOV dean of Bulgarian Naval Academy expressed that this agreement will be utility both two school one of which Karamürsel Vacational School which ensures Turkey to entry into the IMO white list.

The collaboration of the Faculty of Architecture and Design and Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce The Department of Interior Design in Kocaeli University Faculty of Architecture and Design hosted Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce in Conference Hall of Anıtpark Campus on 23.02.2012. The opening speech of the meeting which started at 14.00 is done by Prof. Dr. Yusuf BAYRAKTUTAN. In the meeting in which it is aimed to introduce designs of furniture and space of students and to establish new relationships between the institutions, The President of the Chamber H. İbrahim KELEŞ, the Dean of the faculty Prof. Dr. Kamuran ÖZTEKİN and the associate Dean and chairman of the Department of Interior Design Assist. Prof. Dr. Didem ERTEN BİLGİÇ gave speeches on the importance of information exchange between the institutions and the possibility of new scopes in both educational and occupational realms which can be developed through an associate study.

Visitation to Karamürsel Vocational high school's by rectors of the Bulgaria Naval Acedemy
The Rector Boyan MADNİKAROV and academic staff of Bulgaria Naval Academy have visited Karamürsel Vacatıonal School's and School's simulation laboratory and application of navigation class As a result of visitation they have indicated that they application our school's training, laboratories, workshops and want to make an Erasmus Agreement.

A certified training program between Asım Kocabıyık Vocational School of Higher Education and UGETAM Inc. was held within the Industry-University Framework Programme.
Within the Industry-University Framework Programme, a certified traning course was held in the 2011-2012 fall semester between Gas and Installation Technology Program of Electricity and Energy Department and UGETAM Inc. (the largest training natural gas and installation, test and certification company in Middle East and Balkans).

Faculty Of Architevture And Design, Department Of Interior Design Student Awared By First Prize
A team of Interior Design students - Ertan SABANCI, Emircan ÜNAL, Ahmet ÜNAL, Mehmet Murat SEVİNDİK, Olgun ŞENEL - from the Department of Interior Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Design was awarded with the 1st degree in a design competition named KOÇTAŞ Products Design Concept. The group achieved this degree by outdistancing İstanbul Technical University, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Gazi University.

A Certificate of Appreciation for our University from the Ministry of EU Affairs
On 16 December 2011, at Bahçeşehir University, for the higher education institutions which had the right to get their ECTS and DS Labels as a result of their applications, Certificates of Appreciation for ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), DS (Diploma Supplement) Labels were presented and the Program of the Electronic Project Management System of the National Agency (TURNA) was introduced by the Centre For European Union Education and Youth Programs. Our University was one of the fourteen universities that had the right to get the DS Label in Turkey.

Reconnaissance Report Of Van Earthquake
A team of 3 Academicians of the Faculty of Engineering of Kocaeli University went to the earthquake-hit area and prepared “Reconnaissance Report of Van Earthquake”. The team, which focused on three types of building structures, prepared the report in Turkish and English.

Kocaeli University Fine Arts Faculty at the City Centre
KOU Fine Arts Faculty, is going to start the 2011-2012 Academic year with an openning ceremony that will take place in Anıtpark Campus, on the 26th October at 15.00 hours. The faculty was established in 1997 at Arslanbey Campus by the efforts of Prof. Dr. Ünal Demirarslan and moved to Hereke Borusan Campus in 1999 after the earthquake.

Prof. Dr. Martin Löffelholz gave a lecture on the theories of journalism. The conference was held in the Prof. Dr.Baki Komsuoğlu International Culture and Congress Center the Hall of Black Sea. Prof. Dr. Löffelholz made a presentation entitled "Journalism: An Independent Discipline?" in the conference.

Architecture and Desing Faculty In İtaly
With 3 academic staff and 11 students, Kocaeli University Faculty of Architecture and Design Department of Architecture has attended the international student workshop, “Understanding Brunelleschi” that was realized in Italy-Florensce between 6-13 March 2011. The project leaders of the workshop that was supported by the foundation “The Romualdo Del Bianco” from Florence have been academic staff from Balıkesir University Assist. Prof. Dr. Yasemin İnce Güney and Assist. Prof. Dr. Hatice Uçar. Development of encounter, recognition and fellowship through culture among young people from various countries was the aim of “The Romualdo Del Bianco” with this study.

Six Artists From Kocaeli University Fine Arts Faculty at B-Gallery in Japan
Within the context of simultaneous activities between Tokyo and Kocaeli University Fine Arts Faculty, the “Two East Together” exhibition is opened at B-Gallery in the Ikebukuro region of Japan. From Kocaeli University Fine Arts Faculty, Prof. Reşat Başar, Asst. Prof. Nevzat Atalay, Asst. Prof. Safiye Başar, lecturer Yasemin Sarı and Gökhan Ercan, research assistant Ali Fuat Altın as well as Japanese artists Haruki Sakuraba, Haruko Cho, Sho Shimane, Toshiharu Miki, Tadashi Hoshikawa and Kenji Yoshida exhibited their works at the exhibition. The panel “The Transition from 1999 Erthquake to the Present in Turkey” also held at the Kwansei Gakuin University in Tokyo.

First Prize to Kocaeli University Faculty of Architecture and Design in the Competition of 12th Compasse Volante
The prizes of the Competition of Compasso Volante (Flying Compass) which is this year dedicated to Prof. Ettore Zambelli and the 12th one is organized, was given with a ceremony on 2 October 2010 in Lecco, Italy under the invitation of Politecnico di Milano.

Focused on the İzmit Bay
İzmit Bay is a semi enclosed region where located at the northeast of the Marmara Sea. Pollution load in İzmit Bay increases day after day because of heavy industrialization, rapid increase in population, heavy marine and land traffic and other factors. Because of very limited regeneration capacity especially East and Center basins of the İzmit Bay are among the most polluted regions of Turkey. ..

II. International Economics Politics Conference on Crisis and Development
The second Conference on Political Economy was organized by Kocaeli University (Turkey), Westminster University (England) and Silesian University (Czech Republic) on 16-18 September 2010, in Kocaeli. The main theme of the second conference was determined as “Crisis and Development.” In conference that supported academically by Social Research Foundation (SAV) and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (Türkiye) and financially by Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) and Kocaeli Chamber of Industry (KSO) was intended to address the political economy of crisis and development through all of the political, social, global, and systematic dimensions of crisis and development.

The First Reference Book Investigating The Architecture of İzmit City During The Republican Period
A book entitled “1923-1960: Buildings in Izmit from the Republican Period and News Reports about the City” has been written by Oya Şenyurt, lecturer in Architectural History at the Architecture Department of the School of Architecture and Design at Kocaeli University. Published by Kocaeli Branch of the TMMOB Chamber of Architects, this book is significant because it is the first resource to investigate the architecture of Izmit during the Republican Period and because it is based on first-hand research on the evidence of architectural transformation in the city.

Faculty of Communication Picks Up The Green Camera Environmental Oscar
Kocaeli University, Faculty of Communications left its mark on the Waste&Recycling Short Film Contest, which was jointly organized by Recycling Industry Magazine and Turkish Environmental Protection Association (TUCEV). “Before Tomorrow”, a short film prepared by undergraduate students of the Department of Visual Communication and Design picked up the “Green Camera Environment Oscar”. The film also came in first in the “Waste Oil” category. Our students took their award from Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Environment and Forestry.

The populations of the plant “Blue Star” (Amsonia Orientalis Decne.) in Turkey, facing extinction, taken under conservation by Kocaeli University
The entire natural population samples of the plant Amsonia orientalis (blue star) in Turkey, which is medically and economically important and at the risk of extinction, have been taken under preservation within the scope of the Project no. 2009/050 executed by Prof. Dr. Fazıl ÖZEN and supported by the Scientific Research Projects Unit of Kocaeli University. The plant blue star, rich in cardioactive and anti-cancer glycosides and glycoalcaloids and also used as an ornamental plant, is evaluated as “critically endangered” since it is nearly extinct in nature and as per the Bern Convention, it is in the list of plant species that “must be conserved”.

Laser Material Micro Processing
Laser surface treatment gives an opportunity to improve material properties (physical and chemical resistant) by applying high energy to the part of the substrate. During the laser treatment application the laser beam as a heat source can be controlled and focused on substrate as desired position. Laser surface treatment is non-contact and low heat input application to maintain ceramic’s desired properties and improve the erosion and corrosion resistance of materials.

Chamber of Certified Public Accountants of Kocaeli
The Service Building of the Chamber of Certified Public Accountants of Kocaeli of which the project is the first concrete contribution to the city and realized in an institutional collaboration of Kocaeli Unviersity, Faculty of Architecture and Design is inaugurated.

New State of Matter: Quark-Gluon Plasma
According to today’s physics, at higher temperatures and pressures matter are broken down into quarks and gluons, and they transform into the Quark-Gluon Plasma regarded as a new state of matter. The project supported by TUBITAK with a grant number 105T131 and titled “Investigation of Hadron Production and Hadron Decays in Quark-Gluon Plasma Phase” is directed and completed by Prof. Dr. Elşen Veli with the help of his high energy physics team. His high physics team consists of Assist. Prof. Dr. Jale Y. Süngü, Assist. Prof. Dr. Hayriye S. Pamuk, Assist. Prof. Dr. Melahat Bayar, Res. Assist. Gülşah Kaya and Res. Assist. Nurcan Akşit.

A Nanocomposite termal Interface material has been developed by using local hBN
The researchers from Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Guralp Ozkoc, Dr. Ayse Aytac and Res. Assist. Sebnem Kemaloglu have developed a polymer nanocomposite thermal interface material in a research project funded by National Boron Research Institute by utilizing hexagonal boron nitride which is produced out of Turkish boron resources.

Architecture and Desing Faculty Gets the Third Prize Of 6th Dreamline International Design Olympiad
Our student in the department of Interior Design, Hüseyin Uzut has won the third prize of the competition with the topic of “Toy Design for Gifted Children” in the 6th Dreamline International Design Olympiad, in University Category with his “dibaküs” named project between 5850 designs from 31 countries.

Geological Evolution of the B. Menderes Graben Based on New Data, Western Turkey
The Aegean region is one of the most active extensional regions in the world and is undergoing a N–S extension (figure 1). Using a variety of techniques, the present rate of extension has been calculated to be of the order of c. 4 cm over a distance of c. 800 km between Bulgaria and the Mediterranean.

Groundwater Pollution Control to Remediation
Groundwater resources in karst aquifer systems supply drinking water to about 25 percent of the world population. These type systems which have significant potential for water supply are developed in carbonate rocks, which covers one third of Turkey’s land.

From Waste Vegetable Oils to Biodiesel
Using the oxygenated fuels as an alternative diesel fuel in neat form or as a blend with petroleum diesel fuels always remains on the agenda to reduce the exhaust emissions which are caused by internal combustion engines. Biodiesel usage in diesel engines is also very important since it is an oxygenated alternative diesel fuel. In the project which was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and completed under the executive of Assoc. Prof. Mustafa CANAKCI, waste palm oil obtained from FRITO LAY Chips Factory was converted to biodiesel and its effects on engine performance, combustion and emission characteristics were investigated by testing it in a four-cylinder diesel engine

Micro Seismic Activity of The Mid-Marmara Region is Being Monitored
Seismic risk of Istanbul and its surrounding area has increased right after the 1999 earthquakes and many speculations have been published in the media about forthcoming events. Earth and Space Sciences Research Center (YUBAM) of Kocaeli University, together with the researchers of the GFZ (GeoForschungZentrum), is continuously monitoring the mid-Marmara Region and collecting information for a probable large earthquake that could occur in the region.

Design and Production of an Axial-Flux Disc Type Electric Motor
Within the scope of the project supported by TUBITAK and completed under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Metin AYDIN, a faculty member at the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at Kocaeli University, the design, optimization and prototype of “an axial-flux permanent magnet disc-type electric motor”, which is often used in many applications today, was successfully completed

High-Precision Parallel Robot
Associate Prof. Cüneyt OYSU, Assistant Prof. Serdar KÜÇÜK and Research Assistant Selçuk KİZİR designed and implemented a system known as Stewart platform under the supervision of Associate Prof. Zafer BİNGÜL, an academician of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of Kocaeli University.

One more step ahead in Endoscopy.
Two patients with suspected bile duct cancer within the liver were visualized by a method called cholangioscopy, performed for the first time at the Faculty of Medicine of Kocaeli University in Turkey, to see if there was stenosis, calculus or tumor.

Hydrophobic Metal Surfaces Obtained.
The scientists at the Laser Technologies Research and Application Centre succeeded in obtaining hydrophoby on metal surfaces. Super hydrophobic property was provided by processing metal surfaces by phemtosecond laser.
